Shinobu Kanayama

Shinobu Kanayama elegantly combines various genres and influences into her work. Her experiences in America, Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia transpire through, as she naturally blends those many influences into her very own and unique style.

Shinobu mainly uses two types of kilns in her work. Her dark brown unglazed pieces are the result of strong reduction in a wood fired kiln, while her white glazed ceramics are fired in an electric kiln. Those two very different methods of firing nevertheless yield a beautifully coherent body of works, and all the pieces find their natural place in Shinobu's world. A world filled with weird and humorous creatures, plump donut people in various postures and functional wares with faces peeking out.
